The useful bit.
Reddit is a meaningful source of AI citations and buyer language. Its weight changes by engine, question and time period. I treat it as a research and reputation channel alongside owned content.
How I approached it
I compared published observational datasets from Semrush, Profound and Promptwatch. These use different samples and denominators; I kept their figures separate. I also checked Reddit’s participation rules.
of ChatGPT Search answers contained a Reddit link in Semrush’s October 2025 dataset. Source below ↗
The receipts are fairly loud.
I like a beautiful website. I also like knowing when the internet has decided to take advice from a username that sounds like a Wi-Fi password.
Semrush studied 217,000 unique prompts and 248,000 Reddit URLs. In its dataset refreshed in October 2025, Reddit links appeared in 12.6% of ChatGPT Search answers, 9% of Google AI Mode answers and 3.5% of Perplexity answers. Those are answer-presence rates. They are not Reddit’s share of all citations.
The same study found that 80% of cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes. Q&A threads accounted for more than half of Reddit citations. A useful thread does not need to become the internet’s main character.
Different datasets. Different lenses.
Profound’s research with Reddit covered more than four billion citations and 300 million responses, from August 2024 to late October 2025. Reddit represented 3.11% of citations across its tracked models. This is a citation-share measure, so I don’t compare it directly with Semrush’s percentages of answers.
Reddit participated in that research. I read it alongside independent datasets, with the commercial relationship in view. The useful conclusion is that Reddit deserves attention. It does not establish what any particular brand will earn from it.
Then the floor moved. Classic internet.
Promptwatch reported Reddit’s share of observed ChatGPT Search citations falling from a 3.83% average over July 18–August 7, 2026, to 0.52% over August 14–17. It excluded responses without citations. The report does not disclose the exact sample size for that comparison and says a collection issue could not be ruled out.
I treat the size of that drop as provisional. It is a reason to check a brand’s own questions repeatedly, not a reason to build a business on one borrowed chart.
Here’s where I put Reddit in the mix.
I start with customer questions. Reddit is useful for finding the objection a homepage politely stepped around: the annoying setup, the missing feature, the alternative someone wishes existed. I turn those patterns into specific product answers, comparison pages and useful demonstrations.
Then I look for places where I can actually contribute. I answer the question where it was asked, disclose a connection to the business and follow the community’s rules. A link has to add something. Reddit’s spam policy prohibits repeated or unsolicited mass engagement; each community can add its own requirements.
My channel plan also includes the website, relevant independent coverage, documentation and useful video. I track brand mentions, citations, sentiment, visits and enquiries separately. Karma can enjoy its little orange moment. It does not get to impersonate revenue.
- Research: collect recurring buyer questions and objections.
- Owned proof: publish the answer, evidence and product limitations.
- Participation: help in relevant communities with an honest identity.
- Measurement: recheck the same questions across engines and record commercial outcomes separately.
